Sample object data (from the Science Museum's GOD)

Page history last edited by Mia 15 years ago

I've attached a sample XML file from the Global Object Database used for the Science Museum's 'Brought to Life' project on medical history. Handily for this current project, the first records relate to astronomy objects: sample_GOD_API_data.xml

I've got a whole bunch of term lists to upload, hopefully I'll get a moment on Friday.

Nice. There's a few things that could do with being explained here.

What does the d:ID element mean? Is this a database-generated primary key? If so, should it be considered permanent & persistent, or should it be ignored for external purposes? Same question about the GUID.

The data dump contains two more or less identical entries, except for a different ObjectNumber. I know these to be 'parts', but is there any data to link them together, or do you have to use introspection of the ObjectNumber value (ie looking for the slash) - which wouldn't be ideal. Can we also expect an entry for an object with the ObjectNumber 1979-405, which conceptually consists of the two parts together?

How does the museum define title vs name? This one always seems weird to me, as in natural language, both mean more or less the same thing. 'name' looks more like being a 'type' of object. The museum's practise of including the place and dates within the Title are a little annoying too, as this is a duplication of the other data, and if you wanted to display the object name on a webpage, you'd just want to use 'Planetary volvelle for Mercury' (or possibly 'German Planetary volvelle for Mercury'). But it wouldn't be too tricky to parse this out...

I wonder if we could get people to change how they record title in future - it's more re-usable that way. Remind me if I don't report back. Even better if the title field isn't a composite field internally and we can just change the internal field that 'title' is pointed to.

I was going to start a page on permanent IDs cos it came up a few times at MW2009.

I guess the best format for documenting the fields is in the API documentation but while we're sharing and discussing them I should try and add some here.

Looks great - not too heavy. Do the ObjectMade date fields always contain a year or does the date format ever change between records. By the way, I like the sound of the GOD API...
